One of the first things I did when I arrived was to go to the Social Security office. Stood in line with the rest of the masses, waited my turn and had a nice person take my application.
But remember how I got a new I-94 put into my passport last week? Well, it was not such a good thing after all. The Social Secuirty office could not pull up the new number as it had not hit the system yet. If i had kept my old one from June, the number would have been there already and i could have proceeded with getting a number.
So now, it's going to take up to 2 weeks for Immigration to mail their visas and get it entered into their system. After it is there, Social Security will have to check it and could take up to another 4 weeks before I actually get my number.
It would not be so urgent if....I was under the impression that Stantec will pay me an advance until I get my Social Security, but now it has turned into a huge debacle. Stantec Canada has already terminated me so I have no coverage with them, they were thinking that Stantec USA would have me on by now.
But Stantec US will not hire me until I get my number so they don't have me on their system yet. Which means I have no medical coverage with anyone! That is the scary and hopefully most unlikely unlucky scenario. So I'm in limbo and everyone is trying to figure out what to do with me.
I was pretty mad at myself for not being smarter. I should have hopped over to Seattle when i was in Vancouver earlier this month and applied for my number first. Now I have more 'mah faan' than anything. Just the same old, with Vien. :( Don't even want to think about it, just leave it up to God's grace and hopefully it sorts out in timely fashion.
My only good news is that I've leased a VW Rabbitt! It's white with 2 doors and all tinted (which is a must here). It's also got A/C! It's my only refuge these days as I'm staying at a dingy motel until i can find a place to move. The lady i thought i rented with, since i fwded her some money before i even moved here, has become evasive.
Her mom had some health issues and was staying with her until this weekend which I agreed I can wait for to move in. But I think I'm going to try to find another place and just forget about her. Hopefully, she'll give me my money back.
I've got a cell phone and also got my Arizona driver's licence already so let's see....that's about it. I'm sorta settled in but not really until i can find a place to live and not have to eat out and not have to take clothes out of a suitcase, etc.
Admittedly, it has been tough. I feel homesick. But the show must go on, and I'll keep trying my best.
Grace to you, Vien

What horrible luck you have! I can only shake my head and think, this would only happen to you. Poor gal.
Well, I'm glad you're still able to hook up onto The Loop, so we can cheer you up from there :) And continue to pray for you.
So Viener - since you aren't able to do "work" for Stantec yet, why not take the time to get familiar w/Tucson? Check out the tourist sites, the grocery stores & malls & drugstores, and what sorts of fun things there are to do there.
One of my favourite things about moving (when I was in HK I lived in 3 different places during my 4 years), was to walk around the area and acquaint myself with what is available, etc. Perhaps this would be an excellent and productive way to spend some extra time? ;)
Also, while you're waiting on Stantec, this might be a prime opportunity to organize all the *other* details involved in a move, including finding another place to live, getting your other documents in order, setting up banking, etc. Being proactive and ahead of schedule is a great way to avoid some of the ineptness and incompetence that is often the trademark of the service industry! =D
I already have my banking, etc. set up. Just waiting for my Social Security number is all.
Seriously, nightlife, tourist sites...I've seen it all already.
There's that much time in the evenings and that much less to see, you guys must think I'm exaggerating or something. :)
Yeah, I've been there and only for five day and there was not much to do there! Well, of course all the guys from the football team just wanted to go out and drink. For that there are a lot! Otherwise once you see the place and shop there, it's done!
Wacky says why don't you get a library card?!?
Or take your rented Rabbit and go visit Phoenix!
