down in the Pueblo

It's my 4th night here in Tucson. It's supposed to be about the the same population size as Edmonton and I believe that it is sprawled, but pueblo (Spanish for town) is right.

Their downtown consists of 3 highrises, and the University of Arizona campus. I haven't ventured outside of the downtown-ish area, and while I know that there are wonderful and expensive looking suburbs being built (my company is the engineering consulting for it), so far, this town is looking a bit, ummm, slummy.

It really is as hot here as they say, and I am adjusting to it. On the first day, I had to keep dashing for the indoors because the air was so hot and I felt like I couldn't breathe. Now, I can remain outside for a full 10-15 mins or so before i'm dying.

I'll find out next week whether or not they're going to make me an offer. My immediate boss says that I have to go through an external (non-survey dept) interview with other principals in the office first.

So until then, it's still Edmonton for me.

I am sitting on the fence about whether I like this whole opportunity or not. The weather will be great, there are new places to explore, my work mates seem nice and easy. The downside is: Tucson is too small for my liking, I will have absolutely no friends or family here, the work I do is kinda boring.

But again, I will have to wait til next week to see. Any suggestions if they do make me an offer? Is it ok to say, 'let me think it over'?

I hope to have an adventurous weekend. If so, I will blog about it. :)

Grace to you, Vien

My humble opinion? I would wait for an offer you can't refuse, in a location that causes you to feel like you've moved "up" and progressed from E-town.

For us, that's Vancouver, or Hawaii. Apparently now there are two choices ;)

But if the experiences there leave a bad taste in your mouth (and this is as a visitor, no less!) then it's probably not the deal of the century, ya know?

Well, I think it is fine to say, "Let me think about it" when they do offer you a position. At that point you can talk about your pros and cons about Tucson and such. This is after all a visit to see if you like it and they like you. It needs to go both ways.
I agree though, you should feel like you are "moving up" rather than "moving down" from here.
Pray about it...
